I saw a couple of comments discussing small car vs big car safety in the !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! and I noticed that there were a few videos from IIHS. I dug around on YouTube and found this video that had IIHS's comments on the matter. Enjoy.

How can they give the Yaris a good ranking after that? Scary...

The good rating is from the moderate overlap test. The moderate overlap test simulates hitting another vehicle of the same mass, that's why they rate the cars in different categories.

To my knowledge, IIHS doesn't have a standard car vs car test other than side impact that would represent what they've done in this video.

The other thing that makes me wonder is how smaller cars fare in additional collisions during the same accident.

That's an interesting question. I know that helmets are tested for multiple impacts because the safety agencies have found that there are usually multiple impacts during crashes (racing, motorcycles, etc.).

Good question!!!

I am no safety engineer but I'd think that a SMART chassis would be more "used up" in the first accident than, say, an S class which may not be as deformed and therefore can take multiple hits.

The way I see it, the current gen (and the next gen) smart did well for its size. To expect a small car to go up against a truck or something is just silly.

So, make your small cars have better active safety to make up for any lost passive safety. The best crash is the one you don't get in.

This is true. IIHS also tests and rates crash avoidance systems as well.

Need to get more realistic about these... more often than not, at least one of the vehicles is a bloated SUV. Let's see a Smart vs. Tahoe 50 MPH frontal offset.
